The Leopard (Panthera pardus) (8) has the most widespread distribution off all the great cats. The one that this blog will focus on is the common Leopard (P. pardus) which live in habitats varying from sub-desert habitats to tropical/boreal forests. The Leopard differs from the Snow Leopard most visibally in the colour of their pelt. The Leopard has a ochre base coat along its back and a white stomach with black rosettes with a darker brown colour on the inside (16).
This cat is a nocturnal animal and is often solitary except for when a female enters oestrus. The female typically becomes sexually mature at around three years of age, going into an oestrus that lasts about 4-14 days. The female leopard has a gestation period of 92-112 days and often has a litter of 2-6 cubs (4).The Leopard has been known to live for up to twenty years (16).
